ABSTRACT

Despite the many advances in surgical therapy, medical therapy remains the standard of care for initial treatment or management of erectile dysfunction (ED). Nonsurgical treatment includes neurological, psychological, medical, and pharmacological interventions. This also includes treatment of ED with the use of sex therapy as well as external erection devices. With advances in basic science research, newer pharmacological and genetic therapies may help treat patients previously thought to be strictly operative candidates. Surgical therapy, however, remains an important arsenal in the urologist’s armamentarium for the treatment of medically refractory ED.
