ABSTRACT

Diarrhea is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints, the second most common cause of death worldwide, and one of the four most common infections in elderly residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Nonspecific diarrhea is the most common type of diarrhea in the United States; however, it is anticipated that an increase in the number of specific infectious causes of diarrhea will be diagnosed with the development of newer diagnostic techniques (1,2).
