Chronic pelvic pain is a common disorder that can be associated with significant disability and distress in women. A survey of women between 18 and 45 years of age attending primary care clinics showed that nearly 40% of them endured pelvic pain characterized by lower abdominal pain not associated with menses and intercourse. In this survey, 20% of all respondents reported experiencing pelvic pain for more than one year and 16% reported experiencing pelvic pain for more than five days a month (1).
