ABSTRACT

The fused somatic and autonomic innervation of the pelvic organs reflects the human need to integrate urogenital functions into our social existence. Proper bladder control is essential for everyday life and sexual behavior is an activity upon which intimate relationships depend, as does the continuation of the species. Thus it is that the physiological functioning of the bladder and sexual organs requires intact innervation that extends from the frontal lobes of the cortex to the distant pelvic plexi.
