ABSTRACT

BONY LANDMARKS AND SURFACE ANATOMY The shape and structure of our face is formed by the underlying facial bones (Fig. 1). The forehead is formed primarily by the frontal bone. Several visible and palpable landmarks are notable within the frontal bone. The inferior edge of the frontal bone forms the superciliary arches and the supraorbital margin, which is the superior margin of the orbits and the inferior border of the forehead. The supraorbital notch is a palpable depression along the medial-third of the supraorbital margin in the mid-pupillary line, approximately 2 cm from midline. This serves as the exit point for the supraorbital nerve, a branch of the ophthalmic division (V1) of the trigeminal nerve [cranial nerve (CN) V] and vessels. The medial border of the supraorbital ridge meets the nasal bone to form the nasion. The lateral border of the orbit ends at the frontal process of the zygomatic bone.
