ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Cicatricial alopecia (permanent alopecia) is the result of primary inflammatory attack on the infundibular portion of the hair follicle/sebaceous gland with ultimate destruction of the follicular bulge area, pilosebaceous unit, and eccrine ducts that results in ‘‘follicular drop out.’’ A secondary growth site, the anagen dermal papillae is intimately in contact with the external root sheath, both of which are involved in follicular regeneration. Destruction of the secondary regeneration site will also result in partial cicatricial alopecia.
