ABSTRACT

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS *

At the present time functional analysis in the U.S.S.R. develops very rapidly in several different directions. This discipline, which appeared only in the 20th century, has become one of the most central and most promising branches existing in modern mathematics, because of the depth of its inter nal constructions and theories, as well as because of its fruitful applications. Its application to classical analysis has led to the unification of a whole series of different questions and simplified their interpretation, and in this connection has resulted in considerable progress as regards many problems of mathematical analysis.
