The disease to be described was discovered neither by serendipity nor accident. Rather it was brought to light over the course of years by the persistence and unquenchable curiosity of David T. Purtilo, a young pathologist marked in his formative years by the brilliant and stimulating Robert A. Good at the University of Minnesota.
