ABSTRACT

When trying to deal with problems of film or coating adhesion in a fully quantitative manner, the issue of residual or intrinsic stress in the material inevitably arises. In some cases, these stresses can completely dominate the problem of adhesion strength and stability. Thus, it is important to understand the nature and genesis of these stresses and how they figure into the problem of adhesion measurement. First, however, a few words are in order regarding what is meant precisely by residual or intrinsic stress.
