ABSTRACT

Almost all people periodically experience sound sensations that they ultimately realize are coming from inside their ears or inside their head. These sensations are called tinnitus. Most often the cause of tinnitus is related to the hearing system itself, such as the tinnitus that occurs with hearing loss. However, there are a variety of systemic diseases that are associated with tinnitus. To discuss the etiologies underlying the tinnitus types that are associated with systemic conditions, we will use the categories of tinnitus labeled “objective” and “subjective”. For an overview of disease and tinnitus, we will first examine some epidemiologic links to tinnitus.
