ABSTRACT
Legally and ethically a competent adult has the right to decline any medical procedure, even
if this decision leads directly to death. This right to refuse life-sustaining treatment also
extends to patients without decision-making capacity when the patient’s prior directives
explicitly decline certain treatments or when surrogate decision makers believe that
the patient would refuse a certain treatment if the patient were able to communicate.
