ABSTRACT
Knowledge of the physiology and manifestations of altered cardiac function is essential
for effective clinical management of critically ill patients. Equally important is clinician
awareness of the potential effects of critical illness itself on cardiac physiology. Antici-
pation and recognition of these effects allow the rational selection and titration of
therapy to optimize cardiac function, restore vital organ perfusion, and aid in preventing
or minimizing organ system failure.
