ABSTRACT
Critical illness may be complicated by a variety of intra-and extrahepatic biliary disorders
unrelated to the original illness. These complications include acute cholecystitis, obstruc-
tive jaundice with or without cholangitis, and hepatic dysfunction manifested as non-
obstructive hyperbilirubinemia [intensive care unit (ICU) jaundice] (Fig. 1).
