ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Congenital anomalies of the central nervous system, notably CSF disorders that include hydrocephalus and spina bifida, are major causes of mortality and morbidity in children and adults. There is no real “cure” for many of these conditions, with repeated medical and surgical attention necessary. Survival is possible with handicap, needing special and expensive facilities. Problems may arise from a delay in their diagnosis and the recognition of complications, which may be part of the natural disease process, or due to inadequate surgical or medical care.
