ABSTRACT
An argument can be made that NTP is the longest running, continuously operating, distributed application in the Internet. As NTP is in its third decade, it is of historic interest to document the origins and evolution of the architecture, protocol, and algorithms. Not incidentally, NTP was an active participant in the early development of Internet technology and its timestamps recorded many milestones in measurement and prototyping programs.
