ABSTRACT

Dogs are a very high profile species in the eyes of regulatory agencies. The original Laboratory Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 89-544) was passed in 1966 after a missing pet Dalmatian was used in a medical experiment in a New York hospital. Although the original intent of the act was to curb pet theft, it was amended in 1970, 1976, 1985, and 1990 to include standards for laboratory animal care. Summarized below are the regulatory and accrediting agencies that may impact the use of dogs in research.
