ABSTRACT

A key component of an institution’s veterinary care program is a sound preventive health program. Institution’s should develop a program that best fits their unique needs, including specific research goals and veterinary resources (personnel, equipment, and supplies). A veterinarian knowledgeable in providing veterinary care for dogs should develop and oversee preventive health programs. Elements of a program are described below and include identifying reliable sources of healthy research dogs and developing appropriate quarantine, stabilization, acclimation, and colony separation programs.
