ABSTRACT

Food is essential to survival and health. Our ability to expend energy depends on adequate intake of protein and calories. Aging itself is associated with a lower energy intake. Hallfrisch et al.

have shown a decline in total daily energy requirements after age 40. Energy intake of older men (40 to 74 years old) is nearly a third less (2100 to 2300 calories/day) than that of men age 24 to 34 years old (2700 calories/day). On average, persons over the age of 70 years consume one third less calories than younger persons.
