They perform two seemingly contradictory functions. Articulations hold bones firmly bound to each other, and yet they also perform movement between them.
Joints are classified into three types according to the degree of movement they permit, namely, synarthroses (or immovable fibrous joints), amphiarthroses (or slightly movable joints), and diarthroses (or freely movable, synovial joints).
