ABSTRACT

One of the more valuable administrative tools built into both Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server is the Performance Monitor program. Although the design goal of Performance Monitor is to assist network managers and LAN administrators in performing capacity planning operations, this program can also be used to facilitate a variety of troubleshooting activities, including network troubleshooting. Since the best way to obtain an appreciation for Performance Monitor is by its use, we will examine its basic operation through the use of a few screen displays. However, prior to doing so, let’s first obtain an overview of the general capabilities of this graphical tool and potential differences between its implementation in Windows NT Version 4.0 and Version 5.0, along with information on how it is implemented in the beta release of Windows NT 5.0.
