Surgical interventions for bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in men continue to

expand as newer technologies are added to the armamentarium of available

treatment modalities. When initially compared to the open prostatectomies, trans-

urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) was considered the gold standard

among the minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of benign prostatic

hyperplasia (BPH). However, with the advent of newer alternative surgical treat-

ment options, TURP has been considered less as a minimally invasive treatment

in light of its side effects and potential complications. Indeed, while the efficacy

of TURP remains unchallenged, current efforts have been directed toward finding

relatively less invasive methods to surgically treat BOD with comparatively

fewer potential complications. This chapter will review three of the more

commonly used methods used to treat BOO, particularly that which is secondary

to BPH: endoprosthetics, transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), and

transurethral vaporization of the prostate (TVP).
