ABSTRACT

Design and manufacturing worked with each other from the beginning, thus promoting design for automation and manufacturing planning. This allowed the design development of the complex automation systems to be done in parallel with the product design. A good example of a producible design was the membrane keyboard, which has only II unique part numbers, contains no screws, and is assembled almost entirely by robots. The previous keyboard had 370 discrete part numbers, contained 65 screws, and was assembled by hand!
