ABSTRACT
Leiomyomata uteri are the most frequent myometrial disorders and the most common
pelvic tumor in women. Although they are commonly referred to as fibroids, the tumor
consists of uterine smooth-muscle tissue and is enriched in fibrous extracellular matrix
(1). In some cases, fibroids appear to originate from smooth-muscle cells of the uterine
blood vessels (2).
