ABSTRACT

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. The NIH is composed of 27 Institutes and Centers (ICs), each of which has a defined scientific mission, and most of which support imaging research. Imaging in oncology is supported through a number of different ICs. The cycle is one that typically starts with the applicant considering an idea for an application, consulting colleagues and mentors, and writing a grant application. The majority of NIH extramural dollars support investigator-initiated research. The ICs of NIH utilize many different types of grant mechanisms to support research and training in molecular imaging. Small business innovation research grants and small business technology transfer grants are very useful mechanisms for funding molecular imaging research being conducted at a small business or in collaboration with a small business.
