ABSTRACT

Medical treatment for ankylosing spondylitis (AS), as well as for the different clinical forms of spondyloarthropathies (SpA), comprises a broad range of pharmacologic treatments: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and the more recent biological drugs. The management of patients with AS also includes procedures such as rest, programs of physical exercises, and physiotherapy (see chap. 13). Patient’s education is another important point to consider. An overview of the medical treatments proposed in AS is proposed herein.
