Magnitude of the Problem In the United States, more than 220,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually. Breast cancer will develop in approximately 1 in 8 women who achieve a normal life expectancy. Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among women in the United States (lung cancer is the most common). The incidence is increasing largely due to screening.
