ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of this chapter is to obtain an appreciation for the general composition of the TCP/IP protocol suite. This can be accomplished by first examining the International Standards Organization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model. Although the TCP/IP protocol suite predated the ISO’s Reference Model, by examining the layering concept associated with communications defined by that model one can obtain a better appreciation for the functioning of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
