ABSTRACT

Sealant performance is often viewed as satisfactory if it passes ASTM or ISO or other industry specications. However, it is necessary that the people using the specication know the actual test conditions within the specication. With that information they can then determine whether the conditions used in the tests adequately mimic the actual conditions the sealant will see in use. Blindly accepting specications is the easiest technique, but the one of least value. To help the reader use a more scientic approach, a brief summary of the important features in specications and the test methods contained therein will be reviewed here.
