ABSTRACT

In addition, many standard activities for mesh networks have been conducted by industrial groups. For example, IEEE 802.15,1 IEEE 802.16,2 and IEEE 802.113 have all set up subworking groups to investigate standards for mesh networks. The mesh networks mentioned in the IEEE 802.15 subworking group are aimed at home networking. The mesh networks mentioned in the IEEE 802.11 and 802.16 subworking groups are aimed at extending the reach of the network to areas inaccessible to fixed base

stations. Figure 18.1 compares the architectures of the 802.16-and 802.11based mesh networks. Note that a mesh network can also be used as a backbone of some local-area networks. For example, in an 802.11-based mesh network, each mesh node can be connected to a wireless LAN with an 802.11 access point. This access point can serve some stations under the access point’s coverage.
