When our sample HTML file is loaded by a Web browser, the display might look something like this:

The first thing to notice is that the portions of the HTML document that sit within the braces (i.e., “<>”) do not appear in the display. The portions set off by braces are called tags, and the remainder of the document comprises the content. We say that tags are used to mark up the content; hence the term markup language.
