ABSTRACT

The purpose of both image processing and visual interpretation is to derive information from remotely sensed data. Image processing is defined as the computer processing of digital image data to either extract, or facilitate the extraction of, information from that data. Visual interpretation is the extraction of information by the visual analysis of image data. In extracting information it is often advantageous to utilise both methods of extracting information because of their relative strengths and limitations, as listed in Table 4.1. This information will usually then be entered into a geographic information system (GIS) for integration with other information so as to create management information.
