ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the most challenging aspects of dealing with business rules: the identification of scope and resolution of conflict. The case study centers on a professional business rule administrator who works for a consulting enterprise that is very data-oriented in its development of information systems. Faced with the common dilemma, the business rule administrator creates a preliminary enterprise function model based on other models for service-oriented enterprises. The business rule administrator begins to feel confident that classification of the business rules into data modeling constructs validates the business rules themselves. Business rule-driven data modeling is an excellent approach to developing entity-relationship models. The translation of business rules into data modeling constructs is perhaps the least controversial of the steps, although it is fraught with its own challenges. The scope of business rule collection was wider than that of validation.
