ABSTRACT

The geographical site of original rice (Oryza sativa) domestication is yet obscure. The general consensus is that rice domestication occurred independently in three areas—India, Indonesia, and China—thereby giving rise to three races of rice—Indica, Javonica, and Sinica (also known as Japonica), respectively. There are indications that rice was cultivated in India between 1500 and 2000 b.c. and in Indonesia around 1084 b.c. [1]. In various areas of the world, rice can be found growing under extremely diverse conditions, from dry land to as deep as 6 meters of water [2]. The most productive areas are those where rice is grown standing in water the depth of which is controlled.
