ABSTRACT

Acute leukemia (AL) is a clonal disorder characterized by aberrant hematopoietic cellular proliferation and maturation. Acute leukemia is generally divided into two subgroups, acute myelocytic leukemia ( AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Acute leukemia presents itself either as a de novo disease or secondary as a result of exposure to marrow toxins (1,2) or following myeloproliferative disorders (3). Untreated AL is rapidly fatal, with a median survival of less than 2 months ( 4 ).
