ABSTRACT
Normal portal pressure is near 10 to 12 mmHg, with a gradient of near 0 to 4 mmHg between portal vein and the inferior vena cava (IVC). While the term ‘‘portal hypertension’’ denotes an increased pressure in the portal vein, it is generally reserved for occasions when the portal vein-IVC gradient is increased beyond 10 to 12 mmHg.
