ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) physical layer specifications of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16e standard, especially the subset adopted in the current mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access for time division duplex operation. It discusses how the standard specifications impact the design of some key physical layer signal processing algorithms and how they may impact the design of backward-compatible mobile multihop relay systems. The chapter provides an overview of the IEEE 802.16e OFDMA physical layer specifications from a signal processing perspective. It seeks to the reception of such OFDMA signals and discusses how the main signal processing functions are designed. The chapter explores how the signal processing functions designed to the existing standard specifications might impact the design of backward-compatible relay systems. Since the publication of the first IEEE 802.16 standard for fixed broadband wireless access in 2001, a number of revisions and amendments have been added.
