The majority of all proteins are post-translationally modified, glycosylation being the most
common modification. Therefore, almost all eukaryotic, some bacterial and many viral proteins
carry carbohydrates that can be divided into two principal groups. In N-glycosides the saccharides
are covalently attached to the side-chain of asparagine, whereas the hydroxyl group in amino acids
such as serine, threonine, hydroxylysine and tyrosine are glycosylated in the structurally more
diverse O-linked glycoproteins [1-3].
