The majority of all proteins are post-translationally modified, glycosylation being the most

common modification. Therefore, almost all eukaryotic, some bacterial and many viral proteins

carry carbohydrates that can be divided into two principal groups. In N-glycosides the saccharides

are covalently attached to the side-chain of asparagine, whereas the hydroxyl group in amino acids

such as serine, threonine, hydroxylysine and tyrosine are glycosylated in the structurally more

diverse O-linked glycoproteins [1-3].
