The symbiosis between experiment and theory is well known; likewise, the

advancement of chip-based analytical instruments relies in part on new tools

for diagnosing them. As microfabrication offers us unprecedented control

over the geometry and surface chemistry of our devices, transport phenomena

that were previously negligible can become dominant, and thus, new tech-

niques for observation and theory evaluation have recently been developed.

This chapter focuses on such techniques for diagnosing the performance of

microfluidic systems: novel fluorescence imaging techniques, microparticle

imaging velocimetry (m-PIV), and numerical simulation.
