ABSTRACT

The first phase of the waterfall SDLC is Project Initiation. Some methodologies refer to this phase as Project Planning. This is a misnomer because it encompasses far more than planning. The overall objectives of the Project Initiation phase are to clearly define the problem, scope the project, propose a solution, determine the costs and benefits of that solution, creating what is often called a “business case,” and obtain approval. For many companies, these steps equate to the development of a feasibility study. An outline of a sample feasibility study is included as Exhibit 17.1. The individual elements of the feasibility study are discussed in detail later in this chapter.
