ABSTRACT

PRETRANSPLANTATION PHASE (DAY -30-0) Prior to stem cell transplantation, the host immunity is relatively intact, except for those patients with active progressive cancer, prolonged neutropenia, or chronic steroid use. Those without these risk factors are prone to the same infections as the general population at large. The predominant pathogens are community-acquired viruses that mostly affect the respiratory tract, such as influenzae, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenzae, adenovirus, coronavirus, and the newly discovered metapneumovirus.
