ABSTRACT

The IEEE 802.11b specification represents one of three wireless LAN standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The original standard, which was the 802.11 specification, defined wireless LANs using infrared, Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) communications at data rates of 1 and 2 Mbps. The relatively low operating rate associated with the original IEEE 802.11 standard precluded its widespread adoption.
