Background on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) For a number of years people have developed software and hardware tools to address the spatial characteristics of data. These tools are known as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a general sense, because they address data that has a spatial component, and the spatial and other characteristics are manifest in the storage of data.
