The term proteome was derived from genome to describe the set of proteins
encoded by the genome. Proteomics can be defined as the study of proteomes
much like genomics refers to the study of genomes. In practice, proteomics
includes not only the characterization and study of proteins along with their
isoforms and post-translational modifications (PTMs), but can also involve
the generation of protein expression profiles from external stimulation to the
system of interest and the study of protein-protein interactions and protein
function.
