ABSTRACT

Architecture frameworks have been developed for many domains, not just for defense systems. The use of frameworks crosses international boundaries as well. The rise of information technology over the past decades has resulted in the development of frameworks for the architecture of enterprises. Large organizations, whether commercial or government based, are information-intensive systems. Thus, the focus of enterprise architecture frameworks tends to be driven by information and information technology. This chapter will review two well-known enterprise architecture frameworks and indentify a number of other frameworks. The focus of an architecture framework does not need to be limited to the organization of information about a system or enterprise. For this reason, the chapter will conclude with a review of High-Level Architecture (HLA), which is focused on how a collection of system simulations can be federated into an architecture that can be used to simulate a system of systems.
