ABSTRACT

The content and “size” of the documentation has changed significantly over the years, and is typically in direct proportion to the price of the software. The problem with reference documentation, as with most documentation, is the difficulty in striking a balance between overwhelming detail and practical guidance, between having to cover the many exception conditions and the normal scenarios. All documentation contains information. This category refers to documentation that covers more of the background information. Good design of informational documentation is important. Designers and managers must devote the necessary time to interact with those who prepare such documentation so that the right information is conveyed with proper emphasis where it needs to be. Generating informational documentation is a two-step communication problem — from technical to the marketing persons within the company and from them to the outside world.
