ABSTRACT

As only certain antiviral antibodies are present in sufficient quantities in standard immunoglobulin preparations, hyperimmunoglobulin preparations are needed in the prevention and treatment of a number of viral diseases (4). Such hyperimmunoglobulins are prepared from selected high-titer plasma donations or obtained by donor immunization. While selection of high-titer plasma donations is usually based on the demonstration of high titers of virus antigen-binding antibodies, the importance of the presence of high titers of specific functional and/or protective antibodies in the hyperimmunoglobulin preparation, in addition to a high level of antigen-binding antibodies, cannot be overemphasized.
