ABSTRACT

Perhaps the title of this edition of Lung Biology in Health and Disease, Childhood Asthma, is most appropriate for this chapter on adolescence. In caring for the adolescent with asthma, a clinician must break the barriers

of adolescent disinterest in caring for a chronic illness to attain the confidence of the adolescent patient in developing a functioning partnership.

The task of developing a partnership with the adolescent must be done while

helping the family in their process of allowing their adolescent to become

independent and take over care for the asthma.
