ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION Domestic mites, the main source of allergens in house dust, produce potent allergens that are capable of inducing sensitization and respiratory and cutaneous diseases. The most common species belong to the families Pyrogyphidae, Acaridae, Glycyphagidae, Echymopodidae, Chortoglyphidae, Cheyletidae, and Tarsonemidae. These microarthropods have a worldwide distribution. The most important species are Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae, D. siboney, D. microceras, Euroglyphus maynei, Acarus siro, Suidasia medanensis, Aleuroglyphus ovatus, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Glycyphagus domesticus, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Blomia tropicalis, Chortoglyphus arcuatus, Cheyletus spp., and Tarsonemus spp. (Fig. 1).
