ABSTRACT

This chapter will deal with neoplastic lesions that occur exclusively, predom - inantly or very frequently on facial skin. Skin cancer is increasingly common because of increased leisure time, increased access to holidays in the sun and an overwhelming desire (difficult to under - stand) to look sun-tanned. The face is a particular target for solar damage and neoplasms that develop after pro longed exposure to ultraviolet radiation are espe - cially common on the face. In addition the large number of well-developed hair follicles and sebaceous glands also influ - ence the type of lesion seen in this region. It has been computed, for example, that the incidence of treated non-melanoma skin cancer in Australia in 2002 was more than 5 times the incidence of all other cancers combined.1
