ABSTRACT
Drug abuse refers to the nonmedical, or recreational use of drugs, regardless of their accepted medical value. A “drug of abuse” is defined as any substance that may modify perception, mood, cognitive behavior, or motor function when ingested, inhaled, or injected (1). Essentially all drugs subject to abuse have central nervous system (CNS) effects, with many of these drugs also producing alterations in other organ systems.
